As Twycross Zoo has the largest primate collection in Europe we
welcome research projects on primates. The zoo has considerable
expertise in this field and very high standards of animal welfare
but we still welcome further research on primate welfare and enrichment.
Please note though that some species are in small groups and some
are not suitable for projects. For example, gorillas get very stressed
by being observed for long periods. Check with the research co-ordinator
early in your study design to see if a project might be possible.
We also have a large collection of other animals and again welfare
and enrichment are popular studies.
We are starting some research projects on animal nutrition this
year and would welcome studies that follow the methodology we have
designed so they can contribute to the larger study.
We sometimes supply samples for suitable veterinary studies. Some
samples can only be taken opportunistically.
It is important to note that the welfare of the animals always comes
first. We will not support studies that upset the animals or adversely
affect the routine of the keepers, though most keepers are enthusiastic
to support research and are very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly.
