As a Workshop Day this session would be teamed with a practical involving an investigation into key adaptations and selection pressures.

BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION:
Why are we conserving and why is biodiversity so important? What is conservation? Why do we have to conserve animals? Captive breeding programmes and reintroduction programmes are also covered.
As a Workshop Day this session would be teamed with a practical involving calculating population decline and producing a simple conservation action plan.

NATURAL WORLD – CLASSIFICATION:
How do we make sense of over 1 million animal species? The explanation covers the five kingdoms, organisation of the animal kingdom and key adaptations of a few animal species.
As a Workshop Day this session would be teamed with a practical involving an investigation into key adaptations and selection pressures.

ANIMAL WELFARE AND ENRICHMENT:
How do we care for and ‘amuse’ our animals? Students learn about basic management of captive populations, animal welfare in zoos, the five freedoms and methods of environmental enrichment.
As a Workshop Day this session would be teamed with a practical involving assessment of enrichment and enclosure evaluation.

SCIENCE IN THE WORKPLACE
This workshop covers the requirements of the Applied Science syllabus. In the first session we explain how the zoo uses the biological sciences to do its work. We cover the type of organisation, location, work of the zoo, qualifications of staff and health and safety and animal welfare legislation. The students do an activity around the zoo to assess how well the enclosure designs suit the differing needs of our animals. The second session answers any questions and covers the conservation needs of our animals and the conservation work of the zoo.
